A new year, a new focus. My journey beginning a Low Carb, High Fat (LCHF) Diet and its effect on Type 1 Diabetes.
Hey WARRIORS!
Before we begin, I want to warn you…I am not a writer! But I want to share my experiences, good and bad, and I begin implementing the Low Carb/High Fat (LCHF) Diet. I am very excited to see how this diet will affect my management of Type 1 Diabetes.
My most recent A1C was 6.8 on December 10, 2015. I really want to get into the low 6s or even the upper 5s…a stretch, I know. Well this was going to be pretty near impossible with the diet I was eating. I am on a pump, so I ate a pretty normal diet, not bad but not great. I chased many highs and followed those up with many low…not fun!
I knew I wanted to make a pretty big change to my diet. So after researching the LCHF diet I decided to go all-in on January 4, 2016! Since then I have average about 20 grams of carbs per day. As you can imagine this was a big change from what I want eating previously. Especially compared to what I ate during the holidays!
I plan to give updates on a regular basis and take you along on this journey with me. I’ll update the foods I am eating, and the tracking on MyFitnessPal. I also workout on a regular basis, so I will document what I am doing and it affects my blood sugar.
So to wrap up this first post, I have a few graphs I want to share with you. The first two graphs shows my average BG in the two weeks prior to beginning LCHF and during the Christmas and New Year holiday. The second two graphs show my results after being on the new plan for a couple weeks. As you can see….huge progress!! My average BG went from 171 to 119 (a 30% drop!), and my average insulin usage went from 49 units to 19 (a whopping 61% drop!!)!!
